I have been traveling for work and pleasure for many years now. Let me say that occasionally I have had good food on a plane and I have also found something nutritious in an airport, but it’s not a guarantee!
A successful trip starts with getting off the plane, rested, hydrated and relaxed. I have found that a little preparation goes a long way to helping with this and I have a few tips that I would be happy to share. I pay particular attention to these if I am going on an important business trip or traveling on a lengthy international flight.
Drink lots of water for a couple of days and try to sleep well on the nights preceding your departure. Wear comfortable layers that breathe. Bring something that you can relax with; a book, music, iPad etc. I also like to take some gentle oils to rub into pulse points and my feet.
To maintain hydration, you can try coconut water in addition to your favorite H2O, and cut down on salt in the 24 hours surrounding your trip. I like to exercise pretty vigorously before I travel and I make sure to get up and stretch on the plane every 90 minutes.
For nutrition there is of course the faithful thinkThin® bar. Each time I eat a bar on a journey anywhere I am reminded of how this all started and how the need for good food on the go is key to my sustained energy. I pack several in my case and I still carry a thinkThin® bar with me in my purse every day – no matter where I am. And on the occasions that I have forgotten one, I end up at a store, buying my own product!
Travel can be exhausting and frustrating and if you are traveling with children the factor can be multiplied. Beyond setting the intention for a good journey prior to setting off, I also like to remind myself how fortunate I am to travel and experience so much, to live in the moment and to acknowledge people around me for the interest they bring.
